Adem\u00e1s de reivindicar la filosof\u00eda tomista que seg\u00fan Le\u00f3n XIII es la aut\u00e9ntica filosof\u00eda cristiana, el catolicismo deseaba superar el criticismo kantiano, el positivismo de Comte, el escepticismo de Spencer, el pante\u00edsmo de la Naturphilosophie y el ate\u00edsmo materialista, elaborando una filosof\u00eda que integrase en las coordenadas tradicionales del pensamiento los hallazgos de la ciencia moderna. Franz de Hovre \u2013refiri\u00e9ndose al cardenal Mercier\u2013 escribi\u00f3 que se propon\u00eda &#8220;rejuvenecer la filosof\u00eda escol\u00e1stica poni\u00e9ndola en contacto con la ciencia y el pensamiento modernos, y recristianizar la ciencia y la filosof\u00eda modernas al calor de la filosof\u00eda escol\u00e1stica&#8221;.
