El verbo metano\u00e9o significa cambiar de opini\u00f3n o de prop\u00f3sito y lo encontramos en Plat\u00f3n (Eutidemo 279c). Su segundo significado es el de arrepentirse y su testimonio m\u00e1s antiguo es Antifonte (2.4.12 y 5.91). M\u00e1s adelante lo encontramos con cierta frecuencia en la versi\u00f3n de los Setenta y en el Nuevo Testamento (Eccl. 48, 15; Act. Ap. 8, 22; Apoc. 9, 20; 2 Corintios, 12, 21). El sustantivo metanoia significa a su vez cambio de opini\u00f3n o arrepentimiento (Tuc\u00eddides 3, 36; Aristeas 188; Plutarco 2, 712c) Al parecer el sentido de &#8220;conversi\u00f3n a Dios&#8221; procede del cristianismo.
